What is a gilt?
Gilts are bonds issued by the UK government. Their yields reflect market pricing and are different from the coupons paid by specific gilts. The 5-, 10- and 20-year figures here are estimated nominal par yields, not interest rates offered by a savings account.
Why yield is not the same as return
When gilt prices fall, their yields generally rise. Selling before maturity can produce a gain or a loss, even when the coupon is fixed. Holding one particular gilt to maturity produces cash flows dependent on its purchase price, coupon and redemption terms, so these benchmark yields are not guaranteed returns to an investor.
