What is Bank Rate?
Bank Rate is the interest rate set by the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee. It influences the rates banks and building societies charge borrowers and offer savers, although individual mortgage, loan and savings rates also depend on other factors.
Why it matters
A change in Bank Rate can affect tracker mortgages quickly and can influence the pricing of new fixed-rate mortgages, loans and savings accounts. Existing fixed-rate borrowing normally stays unchanged until the fixed period ends.
